Herman Mechanics was founded in 1856 in Herman, Wisconsin. In 1862, they dropped Mechanics and changed the name to Herman Farmers Mutual. Subsequently, they shortened it to Herman Mutual. In 1962 they merged into Midland Mutual Casualty Insurance Company. This is an authentic Herman Mutual fire mark which is listed in the Addendum to "Footprint of Assurance" (the Authoritative Source for Fire Marks) as US-HB-1 This Herman issued mark is from the mid 1800's. The mark is of tinned iron construction and measures approximately 6.625" X 3.125”. It originally was black with gold lettering and trim. This is a antique fire mark in good condition for its age, with complete paint loss and signs of edge wear/curling, along with significant rusting reflective of years of exposure to the elements.
